A few posts ago, I spoke on how it feels to be LABELLED. Wikipedia describes the word NERD as, A nerd (adjective: nerdy) is a person, typically described as being overly intellectual, obsessive, or socially impaired. So, I asked myself, why do people in school call our group Nerds? None of the three descriptions given by Wikipedia really referred to me nor my close set of friends, maybe obsessive comes closest if I had to choose one for myself. I’m definitely not overly intellectual and I am way far from being socially impaired. I look forward to hanging out with friends, going to the Malls, watching a movie, and attending parties. So, why then are we called Nerds?
Thinking more about it I realized that most likely it is because my school friends and I do things differently that only we understand why we do it . We like revising (reviewing) in advance to get high scores in exams, we obsess with making the perfect projects, we plan out our study schedule, all of which are normal to us but not to others. There are things we love to do that many do not understand why we do it. So, if anyone calls you a NERD, be proud! There’s nothing wrong with it!
On a different note, NERD, GEEK and DWEEB are words creating noise in fashion too. Recently I bought statement shirts from Top Shop. I love them! Here’s 1 of 3.
