WE ARE NO STRANGERS TO COMMUNITY SERVICE. Every year our school partners up with organizations to help out the society in one way or another, be it teaching orphans or building homes. Giving back to the community is fulfilling, and it was even more so when we visited the Jorge B Vargas elementary school for a family affair rather than a school requirement. Surprise, my family falls under the Vargas family tree and for the whole morning we painted classrooms and desks. Apart from my family, a few of my brothers’ friends helped out too. In a project as big as this one, an extra set of hands was always needed.
We took part in Brigada Eskwela, a voluntary effort in which people come together to set up for the new school year. Children walk miles along dangerous paths or row across rivers just to get to school. On the flip side we are privileged enough to not only have a good education, but also to get to school by car and probably sleep on the way there (at least i do). Having spent the morning working with my friends and family whilst preparing brand new classrooms for this school was very rewarding, and i’m not just saying that. If it had not been for this, I would’ve probably been at home looking at my computer screen for hours. Now all I hope for is that we didn’t do a terrible job and the students are welcomed with clean and bright classrooms.
